This week I took to the huge task of trimming the shrubs in the yard. Long overdue for a trimming, the spirea and other assorted shrubs were growing into the lawn and blocking the sun, killing portions of grass.
Saturday I went to my local big-box home improvement store and acquired a top of the line trimming instrument. I came home, extension cord in hand and began chopping away at the overgrowth and reducing them to half their size. While I was a little apprehensive at first, I took more faith in my task as I cut, knowing that although they would be small and sparse for the winter, next spring I would reap the benefits. The cutting that I did now would allow them to grow stronger and healthier in the future.
On slightly related note, I survived my first round of corporate layoffs today. One of my counterparts, who has been with the company for the same six weeks I have, did not. My manager’s position was eliminated as well. Knowing that we were under reorganization, but unsuspecting of any cuts that affected the departments around me, it came as a surprise even though my tenure with the company is so short.
The shocked portion of me fears for my own job and misses those that were let go. The optimistic portion of me realizes that though unfortunate, this is a growing opportunity for me and it was a necessary for us to survive as a company. That in order for us to grow in the future, we had to cut away some of the overgrowth now. I have faith that this is true.
