Net Detective
Tonight we went to see Big Fish, the newest tall tale from Tim Burton. Of course, it's only playing at two theaters in the twin cities and when we showed up at the AMC, the 7:10 p.m. show had already sold out. So we bought our popcorn and waited in line for the doors to open.
More interestingly though, was an ad that was played before the trailers for other movies. Quite simply, it was a handwritten sign, begging the return of someone's gnome, that was apparently stolen from the pleader's yard. It led to this website.
After skimming the website, I thought it was an ad for Travelocity.com. But for such a big fish (no pun intended) like Travelocity to waste it's time in movie theaters and not clearly make a statement to it's identity, is a huge waste of time. The point is lost. If it is an attempt to peak interests, I'd give them points for that, but I doubt it is.
It seems that the website is registered to Bruce Fougere at 333 Corporate Plaza in Raleigh, NC. The source of the HTML contains Java Script that looks like it might be for tracking surfing behaviors.
The company located at the address is McKinney & Silver, an advertising firm with plenty of eye candy on their more than frustrating website.
So while the ad sparks interest, I hope it's not at the cost of the client - the message is lost and the client is unidentifiable.
