There are certain incidents, that when they coincide, make even the most rational person a little wacky. Take, for example, the unusual happenstance of multiple layoffs at your workplace and a migration of email from one Microsoft Exchange Server to another.

When I first started in my new job, there were three of me that did my task. The company flow of information consisted of a veteran, me and a newbie that started the same day I did. Six weeks after my first day, the newbie was the victim of corporate layoffs. A week and a half ago, the veteran was. Now there’s just me.

For the past week, in the mass transit of information that is a migration, I gradually lost access to a number of systems, servers and email. While I consider myself a rational and emotionally stable person, I find the situation a bit unnerving. Haunted by and witness to several stories where the lack of technology access came too early and let the cat out of the bag on another pink slip casualty, I am reminded of old co-workers’ fate and for a split second, I think I might join them.

After a few seconds, I am reassured by my history with technology – this is just another mishap that was unplanned or unforeseen in the migration process. Still, I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels this way.
