Things could be worse. Unless you live in Minnesota, where the newest Columbine-like tragedy has struck, you can’t turn on the TV without hearing about Terri Schiavo. Without going into any of my personal feelings on the subject, I’d like to approach the topic.
I won’t even attempt to argue the emotional struggles Terri’s family, husband and parents alike, have endured over the past fifteen years. But like many, I watched the hospital footage of her, the now infamous clip of her leaning towards her parents and a balloon passing over her head, her eyes seemingly following the balloon’s path. This footage is no doubt compelling, since I had a very different idea of what brain death looked like in an individual. After some research, I was surprised to learn that brain death can look much like life and that the actual signs of it are somewhat hidden.
Once again, HowStuffWorks.com has come to the rescue and covered the topic I was investigating. If that’s not enough for you, there’s more here.
